Two Remarks on Ancient Greek Geometry

چکیده

Modern physical theories tell us that space is not euclidean. Yet, to most people, euclidean geometry seems most natural. Furthermore, most mathematical theories of non-euclidean geometry refer back to euclidean geometry in one way or another. For example, in differential geometry, the differential areas are almost always approximately Euclidean. Why is this? I want to suggest here a reason rooted in our biological programming. I base this on two technical results. One, mentioned by Herbert Busemann [2], is an idea of the physicist Helmholtz about the mobility of rigid objects. As Busemann puts it (on p. 51, his emphasis),

Generalizations of an Ancient Greek Inequality about the Sequence of Primes

In this note, we generalize an ancient Greek inequality about the sequence of primes to the cases of arithmetic progressions even multivariable polynomials with integral coefficients. We also refine Bouniakowsky’s conjecture [16] and Conjecture 2 in [22]. Moreover, we give two remarks on conjectures in [22].

Verbal Dvandvas in Modern Greek

While Greek is rich in compounds, one familiar type from Indo-European, namely dvandva compounds meaning 'X and Y', is essentially nonexistent in Ancient Greek. However, such compounds start occurring in post-Classical Greek and are fairly productive by early Modern Greek. The innovative dvandvas involve nouns, a type well attested elsewhere in Indo-European, but also verbs, such as aniγo-klino...

Amazons: Comparative study of Amazon mythology in ancient literature and art

I myself, a helper in war, was marshalled among them on that day when the Amazon women came, men’s equals” Priam in Homer’s Iliad iii.182-189 Throughout the course of history the Amazons have continued to capture the fascination and imagination of scholars, historians and archaeologists alike. Accounts of these mysterious female warriors can be found scattered amongst ancient Greek and Roman li...

Remarks on Modern Track Geometry Maintenance

A short survey on modern track maintenance methods is given, concentrating on the developments in recent years. The ongoing refinement of the machinery should be shown as the influence of IT-solutions. On top the economic view to the track infrastructure is briefly demonstrated. Further developments in track hardware solutions must respect the obtained high level of track work mechanization. H...

A Nearest-Neighbor Approach to the Automatic Analysis of Ancient Greek Morphology

We propose a data-driven method for automatically analyzing the morphology of ancient Greek. This method improves on existing ancient Greek analyzers in two ways. First, through the use of a nearestneighbor machine learning framework, the analyzer requires no hand-crafted rules. Second, it is able to predict novel roots, and to rerank its predictions by exploiting a large, unlabelled corpus of ...
